Iran Strikes Gulf States

Iran launched missile and drone strikes on Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar on March 8-9, with Saudi reporting its first deaths in the escalating conflict. Oil prices surged to nearly $110/barrel amid fears over the Strait of Hormuz. Kuwait detected 178 ballistic missiles and 384 drones despite its declared neutrality, while Jordan sirens blared and the US embassy in Baghdad was hit.

This escalation follows years of proxy conflicts between Iran and Saudi Arabia, who have backed opposing sides in civil wars in Yemen and Syria. The current direct confrontation marks a significant shift from that long-standing shadow war. The United States has approximately 40,000 to 50,000 military personnel stationed across the Middle East, with major bases in Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain now on high alert. Iran possesses one of the largest and most diverse missile arsenals in the Middle East, with thousands of ballistic and cruise missiles capable of reaching targets up to 2,000 kilometers away. Its drone program is also a key pillar of its military strategy, featuring long-range attack drones like the Shahed-136. U.S. military assessments have estimated Iran's ballistic missile stockpile at over 3,000. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, with about 20% of the world's total oil consumption passing through it daily. Any prolonged disruption to shipping in this narrow waterway could have severe consequences for the global economy, with over 85% of these oil exports historically destined for Asian markets. The strikes on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad are part of a pattern of attacks on American diplomatic and military facilities in Iraq. Pro-Iranian militias have been blamed for previous rocket and drone attacks in the heavily fortified Green Zone. Jordan, which has previously intercepted Iranian projectiles, has activated military and defense cooperation agreements with allied nations to bolster its air defenses. The kingdom has condemned the violation of its airspace and reaffirmed its solidarity with the Gulf states.
