iOS 26.4 Beta Adds Encrypted RCS Messaging

Apple released the second developer beta of iOS 26.4, which introduces support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging. The update aligns iOS with modern cross-platform communication standards and also includes feature enhancements across six core apps, including Apple Music, Podcasts, and Weather, according to reports.

The Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol was first conceived in 2007 and brought under the GSM Association (GSMA) in 2008, aiming to be a modern successor to SMS/MMS. However, early adoption was crippled by fragmented carrier implementations and a lack of interoperability, which stalled its progress for years. A major turning point was the GSMA's publication of the RCS Universal Profile in 2016, a single, industry-agreed standard to unify features across carriers and devices. Google's 2015 acquisition of Jibe Mobile provided the critical backend infrastructure that allowed it to begin a global rollout of this standard on Android via its Messages app in 2019. Apple's initial adoption of RCS in iOS 18 provided rich media and typing indicators in cross-platform chats but lacked end-to-end encryption, a significant security difference from iMessage. Messages between iPhone and Android users, while upgraded, were not as secure as native iMessage chats. This beta's introduction of encryption aligns with the GSMA's recent Universal Profile 3.0 release, which specifies end-to-end encryption based on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol. This makes RCS the first large-scale messaging service designed to support interoperable end-to-end encryption between different clients and providers. The MLS protocol is an open standard developed by the IETF to provide an efficient and secure foundation for group messaging. Its adoption by the GSMA for RCS aims to solve the complex problem of enabling secure, multi-device, and interoperable communication at a global scale. By integrating this standard, Apple is moving beyond basic feature parity to address the critical security and privacy expectations set by modern messaging platforms. This update effectively closes the encryption gap between iMessage and RCS, creating a more unified and secure communication landscape across both iOS and Android ecosystems.
