Higher Ed Invests in ASL Interpreters
Ventura County Community College District is recruiting an ASL interpreter specialist, highlighting institutional investment in disability services.
This hire signals a proactive approach to meeting the communication needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff within the district. Oxnard College, where the position is located, emphasizes creating an accessible and Deaf-friendly campus. Colleges and universities face increasing pressure to comply with ADA regulations, particularly regarding digital accessibility. A 2024 update to Title II of the ADA clarifies requirements for web and mobile content, mandating adherence to WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards, with compliance deadlines in 2026 and 2027 depending on population size. ASL interpretation extends beyond the classroom, encompassing academic internships and various campus activities. Institutions are also utilizing video remote interpreting (VRI) to broaden access to qualified interpreters with specific expertise. This investment aligns with a broader trend of educational institutions enhancing language services to better serve diverse student populations. These services include document translation, on-site interpretation, and video remote interpreting in multiple languages, including ASL.
