IAEA Warns of 'Radiological Release' Risk in Iran

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has issued a warning that it 'cannot rule out' a potential radiological release from the ongoing military strikes in Iran. While no nuclear facilities have been confirmed hit, the proximity of the fighting to sensitive sites is raising global alarm about potential contamination.

A radiological release is the uncontrolled dispersal of radioactive material, which can harm people and the environment. Such an event could necessitate the evacuation of large areas, potentially the size of major cities or even larger, and contaminate the food chain. The severity of a radiological event depends on the type and amount of radioactive material released. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has stated that while no increase in background radiation has been detected in neighboring countries, a radiological release cannot be ruled out. The agency's Incident and Emergency Centre is on standby to assist, but has been unable to establish contact with Iranian nuclear regulatory authorities. Iran's key nuclear sites include the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, the Tehran Research Reactor, and uranium enrichment facilities at Natanz and Fordow. In June 2025, U.S. and Israeli airstrikes reportedly caused "extensive damage" to several nuclear sites, including uranium conversion and enrichment facilities. Satellite imagery from March 2026 shows damage to the entrance of the underground Natanz facility. The IAEA has a history of conducting inspections at Iran's declared nuclear facilities to verify that nuclear material is used for peaceful purposes. However, in recent years, particularly since 2018, Iran has limited access for inspectors and stopped the agency from accessing camera footage at some sites. Following military strikes in June 2025, IAEA inspectors were withdrawn for safety reasons and have not had full access since.
