Fremont Gets a New Food Delivery Robot
A new autonomous food delivery robot is coming to Fremont. The vehicle is part of a new initiative to improve and modernize local delivery services within the city.
The new robot, named "Dot," is an in-house project from DoorDash's robotics and automation arm, DoorDash Labs. It's manufactured locally in Fremont in partnership with advanced manufacturer Sonic Manufacturing. Dot utilizes a combination of lidar, cameras, and radar to navigate city streets and sidewalks. Before its Fremont debut, the robot underwent extensive testing, accumulating hundreds of thousands of miles on public roads in the Phoenix metro area. The deployment in Fremont is structured in phases, beginning with a small-scale, monitored rollout of up to three robots. If successful, the program will expand to as many as 30 robots operating under remote supervision. The city has the authority to pause or revoke DoorDash's encroachment permit if any safety or compliance issues arise. The robot's inaugural delivery is scheduled for March 5th, kicking off the 4th Annual Fremont Restaurant Week. The initial service area will cover the Downtown/Central, Centerville, and Irvington neighborhoods, with primary corridors including Fremont Boulevard, Walnut Avenue, and Paseo Padre Parkway. Dot is designed to operate at different speeds depending on its location, with a maximum of 5 mph on sidewalks, 16 mph in bike lanes, and 20 mph on neighborhood streets. The all-electric vehicle is designed to carry approximately 30 pounds of food per trip. This initiative is part of DoorDash's broader Autonomous Delivery Platform, which aims to route orders to the most efficient delivery method, whether it be a robot, a human Dasher, or a drone. The introduction of Dot's 360-degree sensors and camera array has prompted discussions about privacy, which will be addressed with the city as the pilot program progresses.
