Growing cities pressure public services

Over 56% of the world’s population lives in cities, expected to hit 70% by 2050, pressuring infrastructure and public services noted.

Urban growth strains infrastructure like roads and public transportation, leading to congestion and longer commute times. This impacts economic productivity and increases pollution. Many cities face housing shortages and rising property prices due to rapid urbanization. This results in inadequate living conditions and the expansion of informal settlements. The Department of Justice (DOJ) Title II rule mandates that state and local governments ensure their digital platforms meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards. Larger entities (serving 50,000 or more people) have a compliance deadline of April 2026, while smaller jurisdictions have until 2027. Similarly, healthcare organizations with 15 or more employees must comply with updated Section 504 rules by May 11, 2026, with a May 10, 2027 deadline for smaller entities. AI-powered tools are emerging to enhance digital accessibility by suggesting alt text for images and detecting contrast issues. Conversational AI and voice navigation are also becoming expected features for ADA-compliant web design, particularly in e-commerce, healthcare, and education.
