Ras al Khaimah pivots ultra-luxury

Ras al Khaimah is repositioning itself as an ultra-luxury tourism destination, with five-star hotels comprising 91% of future development. Hotel executives cite the upcoming Wynn casino as a key catalyst expected to boost hotel rates and establish new regional hospitality standards. The emirate is moving away from traditional package holidays to attract affluent, experience-driven travelers.

- The Wynn Al Marjan Island, a $5.1 billion integrated resort, is slated to open in early 2027 and will feature 1,542 rooms and suites, 22 dining venues, a theatre, and luxury shopping. This project is the largest single foreign direct investment in the emirate's tourism sector. - Ras Al Khaimah aims to attract over 3.5 million visitors annually by 2030, a significant increase from the 1.35 million overnight visitors recorded in 2025. The long-term goal is for tourism to contribute one-third of the emirate's GDP. - This luxury pivot is part of a broader economic diversification strategy to reduce reliance on traditional sectors. The government is actively promoting foreign investment through business-friendly policies and the development of state-of-the-art infrastructure. - Beyond the Wynn resort, a pipeline of other high-end hospitality brands are establishing a presence, including W Hotels, Four Seasons, Nobu Hotels, and Nikki Beach, which will collectively double the hotel room inventory. - The emirate's tourism strategy is rooted in sustainability, with a "Balanced Tourism" approach that aims to protect natural assets and promote cultural heritage. Ras Al Khaimah is striving to become a regional leader in sustainable tourism by 2025. - To cater to the ultra-luxury market, Ras Al Khaimah is enhancing its accessibility with a new VVIP terminal and private jet hangar complex at RAK International Airport, scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027. - The hotel development boom includes a significant focus on branded residences, with projections that 40% of new residential units in the emirate between 2026 and 2029 will be branded. - The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) was established in May 2011 to promote the emirate as a leading destination for luxury, adventure, and cultural tourism.
