Michelin Chef Soul Food
Chef Deborah VanTrece continues making waves by redefining soul food and highlighting its universality through her Michelin-recognized Atlanta restaurants and FYI Network show, "Global Soul Kitchen." Her work celebrates the power of food to bridge cultures and tell stories through comfort dishes.
Chef Deborah VanTrece’s culinary journey began after a 20-plus-year career as an international flight attendant, which exposed her to diverse global cuisines. She then attended the Art Institute of Atlanta's culinary program, where she graduated as valedictorian in 1994. Her flagship restaurant, Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours, earned a spot in the prestigious Michelin Guide in both 2023 and 2024. Michelin praises VanTrece as a "driving force behind the celebration of Southern cuisine," highlighting her inventive flavors. She was also a 2023 James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast. Before her current ventures, VanTrece served as an Executive Chef during the 1996 Centennial Olympics in Atlanta, catering to international dignitaries. In 1998, she opened her first restaurant and catering business, Edible Art, which became an institution in East Atlanta. The VanTrece Hospitality Group also includes Oreatha's at The Point, a concept inspired by comforting dishes from mothers worldwide. Additionally, VanTrece curates the menu for the Centurion Lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the first of its kind in Atlanta. Her book, "The Twisted Soul Cookbook: Modern Soul Food with Global Flavors," is a best-seller, and she is currently working on a second book. VanTrece is also a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion, mentoring young chefs of color and championing sustainable farming. On her FYI Network show, "Global Soul Kitchen," now in its second season, VanTrece explores the historical and cultural connections behind her dishes. The show features recipes that fuse traditional Southern soul food with international influences, such as Jamaican beef pot pie and black-eyed pea biryani.
