Vermont student art as advocacy

Vermont students are using art projects tied to the state's 250th anniversary to surface migration, environment and social-justice narratives — a low-barrier platform for community education and coalition-building. (wcax.com)

UNFINISHED REVOLUTIONS: Vermont Student Art Celebrating the 250th was installed in the Vermont State House Cafeteria Gallery and was on view through March 27 during State House hours (generally 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. most weekdays). (education.vermont.gov) The statewide show gathered work from more than 150 students, representing 14 schools, totaling roughly 130 original artworks submitted for the March exhibition. (education.vermont.gov) The exhibition was produced by the Vermont Agency of Education in partnership with the Vermont 250th Anniversary Commission, the Vermont 250th Education & Outreach Committee, and the Vermont State Curator’s Office. (education.vermont.gov) Up to three student pieces were slated for selection by the Vermont State Curator for permanent inclusion in the Vermont State Art Collection, with selection announcements scheduled for the closing celebration on March 26 from 3:30–5:30 p.m. and part of the show planned to travel to Chimney Point for the 2026 season. (education.vermont.gov) The statewide information packet set the project timeline and submission logistics: the exhibition launched at the Vermont Art Educator Association fall conference on Oct. 3, 2025, artwork delivery windows ran Jan. 20–Feb. 18, 2026, and electronic participation release forms were to be submitted to Eric Howard at the Agency of Education. (education.vermont.gov) Separate Vermont 250 funding announced in December 2025 saw the Vermont 250th Anniversary Commission, Vermont Arts Council, and Vermont Humanities distribute $62,875 in grants to 12 Vermont communities to support 250th history, arts, and culture projects across the state.
