Global Unrest Fuels Material Cost Uncertainty

Ongoing geopolitical conflict and rate uncertainty are creating volatility for home builders and contractors, impacting material costs and project timelines. This environment makes it critical for electrical contractors to build wider cost contingencies into job pricing for items like copper wire and panels.

Analysts forecast a continued bull run for copper, a key material for electrical work, with J.P. Morgan projecting prices could peak around $12,500 per metric ton in the second quarter of 2026. This surge is driven by a global refined copper deficit, estimated at approximately 330,000 metric tons for 2026, as severe supply disruptions meet rising demand. The global market for electrical steel, crucial for transformers and panels, is also expanding, with projections showing it will reach $28.1 billion in 2026, up from $26.5 billion in 2025. This growth is fueled by the demand for high-efficiency grid components, industrial automation, and the expanding electric vehicle market. Ongoing geopolitical conflicts, trade disputes, and sanctions directly interrupt the supply of raw materials. These events create price volatility and can force suppliers to find alternative, often more expensive, sources for essential metals, impacting project budgets and timelines. While the Federal Reserve enacted interest rate cuts in 2025 with more expected, borrowing costs remain elevated. For contractors, any relief from lower financing costs may be offset by stubbornly high material prices, which are influenced by persistent tariffs on goods like steel and aluminum. The residential construction sector is expected to see output rebound by 2.5% to 2.6% in 2026, partly in response to easing interest rates. However, this increased activity could further pressure the supply of materials and skilled labor, sustaining upward pressure on overall project costs for contractors.
