Claude Hits #1, Suffers Outage, Embeds in GitHub

Anthropic's Claude had a turbulent 48 hours, rising to #1 in the App Store while also suffering a widespread outage. The events highlight the dual reality of rapid AI adoption and operational risk. Meanwhile, developers are increasingly embedding Claude into core engineering workflows, using it as an AI team member for code reviews and documentation.

The surge in Claude's App Store ranking from outside the top 100 in late January to #1 by early March was significantly fueled by a public dispute with the Pentagon. This rapid ascent, which saw daily sign-ups triple, occurred as Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, publicly resisted demands from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for unrestricted use of its AI for "all legal purposes." The core of the conflict involved Anthropic's refusal to remove safeguards preventing Claude's use for mass domestic surveillance and in fully autonomous weapons systems. This stance put a $200 million contract with the Department of Defense at risk and resulted in the Trump administration designating the company a "supply chain risk," a label typically reserved for foreign adversaries. While the company's valuation soared to $380 billion after a $30 billion Series G funding round in February 2026, it faced operational turbulence. A widespread outage on March 2nd presented "elevated errors," primarily affecting the main web interface and user login paths, while the core API remained functional. In enterprise workflows, developers are increasingly treating Claude as an AI team member through GitHub integrations. Using YAML configurations in GitHub Actions, teams can automate pull request reviews, allowing Claude to analyze code for bugs, style issues, and adherence to project standards, and then post comments with its findings. This move toward agentic AI in software development is part of a larger trend of embedding AI directly into core business processes. In HR technology, for instance, AI-driven platforms are already transforming compensation strategies by analyzing real-time market data to ensure pay equity and transparency, moving beyond traditional manual benchmarking. The goal is to create a "blended workforce" where AI agents collaborate with human employees to automate and optimize complex workflows.
