Platforms let AI run stores

Shopify has released an AI Toolkit that connects agent and code models (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini) directly to merchant stores so agents can access store data and workflows, effectively letting AI operate parts of a shop rather than just assist humans. ( ). Shopee is pushing similar tools for sellers with a Chat AI Assistant and a Product AI Optimiser to automate messaging and listings for smaller merchants. (rappler.com)

Shopify has started letting artificial intelligence agents do store work inside its platform, not just answer questions about it. (shopify.dev, shopify.dev) The company’s new Shopify AI Toolkit supports Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini Command Line Interface, Visual Studio Code, and parts of Codex Command Line Interface, according to Shopify’s developer docs and changelog published in April 2026. Shopify says the toolkit can connect those tools to store data, documentation, application programming interface schemas, and “store execute” commands through the command line. (shopify.dev, shopify.dev) In plain terms, the toolkit gives an agent the shop manual and the control panel at the same time. Shopify says merchants and developers can use it to manage a store through command-line workflows instead of clicking through the admin dashboard. (shopify.dev, community.shopify.com) Shopify has been building toward this for months. On January 11, 2026, the company said it was connecting merchants to “every AI conversation,” and in March it said “Agentic Storefronts” would let merchants sell through ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and the Gemini app from Shopify Admin. (shopify.com, shopify.com) That leaves Shopify pushing on two fronts at once: artificial intelligence systems that help shoppers buy, and artificial intelligence systems that help merchants run the back office. Shopify’s developer docs also now include guides for building shopping agents that can answer product questions, handle carts, and connect to storefront features through the Model Context Protocol. (shopify.com, shopify.dev) Shopee is moving in a similar direction for smaller sellers, with tools aimed at routine jobs rather than full store control. Its Seller Education Hub says Chat AI Assistant can answer buyer questions on a schedule, including nights, weekends, and public holidays. (seller.shopee.ph, seller.shopee.ph) Shopee’s Product AI Optimiser, which appeared in seller materials in April 2026, asks merchants to upload details such as size charts and white-background images so the system can improve listings and recommendations. Shopee describes it as an “AI partner” that gets better as sellers feed it more catalog data. (seller.shopee.ph, seller.shopee.ph) The practical shift is that marketplace software is no longer just offering text suggestions inside a dashboard. The new tools are being wired into product catalogs, customer messages, store policies, and execution layers that can change how a shop operates day to day. (shopify.dev, seller.shopee.ph) Shopify’s own community forum has also surfaced the main warning: test first. In a company-hosted question-and-answer post published this week, Shopify advised merchants to try agent workflows on a development store or duplicate theme before pointing them at production. (community.shopify.com) The result is a new division of labor inside online retail. Humans still set prices, policies, and brand rules, but the platforms are increasingly handing the repetitive store work to software that can read instructions and act on them.
