Google Launches Free AI and Tech Skills Platform

Google has launched "Google Skills," a free learning platform designed to teach AI, coding, and other tech skills from a beginner level. The platform, available at skills.google, offers personalized dashboards and provides certificates upon completion of courses.

The new "Google Skills" platform unifies nearly 3,000 courses and labs previously scattered across Google Cloud, Google DeepMind, Grow with Google, and Google for Education. This consolidation brings all of Google's educational resources into a single, centralized hub for learners. In the past year alone, users completed over 26 million of these courses and credentials. Content ranges from beginner-level introductions, such as the "Google AI Essentials" course which requires no prior experience, to advanced certifications for seasoned developers. The platform also features specialized content like Google DeepMind's "AI Research Foundations" for those interested in AI research careers, and short "AI Boost Bites" for quick learning. A significant feature is the integration of hands-on learning through AI-powered labs using Gemini Code Assist, allowing users to start coding immediately. To boost engagement, the platform incorporates gamification elements like streaks and leaderboards, which Google claims makes learners 95% more likely to complete a course. While many resources are free, Google Cloud customers get access to the entire on-demand library at no additional cost. Individual developers can also receive 35 free credits monthly for hands-on labs. To create direct pathways to employment, Google has established a hiring consortium of over 150 companies to connect with individuals who have completed Google Cloud Certificates. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between training and employment in the tech industry. The launch of "Google Skills" places it in competition with established online learning platforms like Coursera, edX, and Udemy, which also offer a wide range of tech and AI courses. However, Google's platform differentiates itself by consolidating its own expert-led content and integrating its latest AI tools directly into the learning experience.
