Philippa Gregory BBC Interview

Philippa Gregory discussed "The Other Boleyn Girl" on BBC's World Book Club, diving into her research process and Tudor court life intricacies. The program offers insights on blending historical fact with literary imagination. Gregory explored the enduring fascination with Anne and Mary Boleyn for both newcomers and longtime fans.

"The Other Boleyn Girl," published in 2001, is one of Philippa Gregory's best-selling "Tudor Court" novels, a series that also includes titles like "The Constant Princess" and "The Boleyn Inheritance". The book won the Romantic Novel of the Year Award from the Romantic Novelists' Association. The novel was adapted into a 2008 feature film starring Natalie Portman as Anne Boleyn, Scarlett Johansson as Mary Boleyn, and Eric Bana as Henry VIII. A lesser-known BBC television film adaptation was also made in 2003, with Natascha McElhone playing Mary and Jodhi May as Anne. While a commercial success, the novel and its film adaptations have faced scrutiny from historians for their creative liberties. Gregory herself acknowledges that much of the novel is a fictionalized account, as very little is definitively known about Mary Boleyn's life. Key historical inaccuracies cited by critics include the timeline of Mary's affair with Henry VIII and the portrayal of Anne Boleyn's character and actions. The novel depicts Mary as innocent and Anne as ruthlessly ambitious, a characterization that is debated by historians. The real Mary Boleyn was at one time the mistress of King Henry VIII, and her sister Anne became his ill-fated second wife. However, the paternity of Mary's two children remains a subject of historical debate. Following the success of her Tudor novels, Philippa Gregory has also written "The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels" series, which further explores the lives of influential women during these tumultuous periods of English history.
