Geopolitical Shock Raises Resilience Stakes

Iran's retaliatory attacks on Israel are a stark reminder of how regional instability can disrupt global commerce. The event highlights the growing need for platforms to have resilient, multi-rail payment systems that can weather currency shocks and cross-border blockages.

Platforms embedding payments are transforming from software providers into revenue engines. Shopify's merchant solutions, primarily payment processing fees, accounted for 73.54% of its total $8.88 billion revenue in 2024. Vertical SaaS companies are following suit, integrating payments to expand their total addressable market and increase revenue per user by up to 5x. This shift to embedded finance is powered by payment facilitation (PayFac) models, where platforms directly integrate payment processing. This allows for monetization through transaction fees, subscription tiers for premium features, and charging for interchange fees. Restaurant platform Toast, for example, saw its Gross Payment Volume (GPV) grow 23% year-over-year to $195.1 billion for the full year 2025. Geopolitical events introduce significant volatility into cross-border transactions through sanctions, capital controls, and currency fluctuations, impacting global supply chains. This instability elevates the need for payment orchestration, which intelligently routes transactions through multiple payment service providers (PSPs) to increase reliability and reduce costs. If one processor fails, transactions are automatically rerouted, minimizing disruptions. The complexity of international payments is also driving the adoption of real-time payment (RTP) networks, although cross-border settlement can still lag. While domestic RTP systems in the U.S. like FedNow and RTPĀ® offer instant clearing, international transactions often revert to slower, traditional rails once they cross the border. Initiatives like Project Nexus, involving central banks from India, Singapore, and others, are working to create standardized connections between these domestic instant payment systems. To combat the rising threat of sophisticated fraud in this complex environment, platforms are turning to AI. AI-powered systems can analyze hundreds of risk factors in milliseconds to detect and prevent fraud in real-time. This technology also powers intelligent payment routing, which analyzes transaction data to select the optimal processor, boosting authorization rates and reducing operational costs. For sales professionals, navigating this landscape requires a consultative approach. Enterprise fintech sales cycles can span 9-18 months and involve numerous stakeholders, from the CFO to heads of risk and compliance. Success depends on understanding key SaaS metrics like Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR), Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), and Lifetime Value (LTV), which are crucial for building a business case. Mastering negotiation tactics and understanding the intricacies of enterprise procurement cycles are essential for closing complex deals.
