New Trail Running Shoes Feature Plates

The Running Event showcased 45 new trail running shoe models from 23 brands for 2026, with two major trends emerging: plated race shoes for increased propulsion and efficiency, plus advances in lightweight technical uppers for all-terrain grip.

- The concept of plated running shoes dates back to the late 1980s, when Brooks released the Fusion and Fission models with a "Propulsion Plate System." However, the technology was popularized for road running by Nike's Vaporfly 4% shoe, which was released in 2017 after its appearance in the 2016 Olympics. - For trail running, plates made of carbon fiber or other composites like Pebax and nylon provide propulsion, underfoot protection, and stability on uneven surfaces. To better adapt to varied terrain, some trail-specific designs feature forked plates or multiple, parallel plates. - The plate works in conjunction with thick, lightweight, and responsive foam midsoles, such as those made from PEBA (polyether block amide). This foam provides cushioning and high energy return, while the rigid plate acts as a lever to propel the runner forward with each step. - While studies have confirmed that plated shoes can improve running economy by 2-3% on flat, consistent terrain, their benefit on varied trails is still debated. Some research suggests they may increase the energy cost of running uphill, though many elite trail runners have set course records wearing them. - Beyond carbon fiber, some brands use Pebax for their plates, a lighter polymer derived from castor beans that can be processed into a stiff plate structure. More affordable and flexible alternatives like nylon and fiberglass plates are also used, offering a middle ground in terms of stiffness and price. - The North Face was one of the first brands to introduce a carbon-plated trail shoe in 2021. Since then, numerous other brands including Hoka, Nike, Salomon, and Saucony have released their own versions. - Alongside plated technology, advancements in uppers include the use of durable, lightweight materials like Kevlar-reinforced fabrics and single-piece mesh to create a secure and breathable fit without adding excess weight.
