A cottage-renovation YouTube episode halted a kitchen makeover after the team said they found more asbestos during the build. (youtube.com) The video, published on Catherine Kay’s channel, is titled “Cottage Renovation NIGHTMARE! We found ASBESTOS! Kitchen Worktops Are IN & Colour Drenching,” and its description says the project hit “another hurdle and bump in the road” before worktops went in. (youtube.com) Asbestos is a group of mineral fibres once used in boards, insulation and other building products because it resisted heat and wear. Britain’s Health and Safety Executive says the material was used in many buildings until it was banned in 1999. (hse.gov.uk) The risk comes when those fibres are disturbed and breathed in during cutting, drilling or demolition. The Health and Safety Executive says asbestos is still the biggest cause of work-related deaths in Great Britain, with around 5,000 deaths a year from related diseases. (hse.gov.uk) That is why a renovation can stop even when a room looks nearly finished. The Health and Safety Executive says a refurbishment or demolition asbestos survey is meant to identify hidden asbestos before structural work starts, and that survey can require destructive inspection with the area vacated. (hse.gov.uk) Kitchen projects are not exempt from that risk in older homes. New South Wales’ asbestos safety guidance, which illustrates common domestic locations, says asbestos may still be found in kitchens built or renovated before 1990, including in sheeting and floor materials. (asbestos.nsw.gov.au) Health agencies say the health effects often take years or decades to appear. The National Cancer Institute links asbestos exposure to mesothelioma and lung cancer, and the National Health Service says asbestosis is a serious lung condition caused by past exposure. (cancer.gov) (nhs.uk) For homeowners, the practical result is delay, added testing and specialist removal before other trades can continue. In this episode, the kitchen still moved forward in part with worktop installation and painting, but the asbestos find turned a reveal-style renovation video into a reminder that older-house budgets often need room for hidden hazards.
