Amsterdam's IJtunnel to Close for 18+ Months

The renovation of the 1968 IJtunnel is part of a much larger infrastructure overhaul in the Netherlands, with agencies like Rijkswaterstaat facing a maintenance backlog exceeding €50 billion. This specific project will replace the tunnel's entire surveillance and security system, ventilation, lighting, and asphalt to ensure future safety and reliability. This initiative uses Amsterdam's traffic management ecosystem and historical data to simulate multimodal mobility scenarios, testing AI-aided strategies to improve traffic flow and reduce emissions during the closure. This move toward AI-supported traffic management is a strategic shift for Amsterdam, aiming to move beyond predefined, rule-based systems that are less effective during major disruptions. The goal is to develop tools that can support traffic operators by analyzing data, forecasting the impact of interventions, and proposing optimal, resilient responses in real-time.
