Agents Become the Product

- Enterprise AI is shifting from copilots to autonomous 'agents' that perform bounded business tasks. - Google showcased agent tools used by about 150 organisations and announced a $750m fund for agent development. - OpenAI added workspace agents to ChatGPT, making platform data access and workflow integration central to vendor choice. Enterprise AI vendors are no longer selling just chat windows; they are selling software agents that can complete narrow jobs inside a company’s systems. (blog.google) An AI agent is a program that can take a goal like “prepare the weekly sales brief,” pull data from approved apps, and keep working after the user closes the tab. OpenAI said its new workspace agents in ChatGPT can run “long-running workflows” in the cloud and operate within company permissions. (openai.com) Google used its Cloud Next event on April 22, 2026, to pitch what it called the “agentic enterprise,” with a new Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform at the center of that strategy. In a separate announcement, Google Cloud said it was setting aside $750 million for partners building and deploying agentic AI. (blog.google; prnewswire.com) That fund is aimed at Google Cloud’s 120,000-member partner ecosystem, including startups, systems integrators, and consulting firms that package AI tools for large companies. Google said the money can support proof-of-concept projects, engineers, cloud credits, and deployment rebates. (prnewswire.com; techcrunch.com) Google is also pushing the plumbing that lets one agent talk to another. The Linux Foundation said on April 9 that the Agent2Agent protocol, a Google-created standard for agent interoperability, had backing from more than 150 organizations in its first year. (prnewswire.com; linuxfoundation.org) OpenAI’s move points to the same battleground from the other side. The company said workspace agents are shared team tools that can connect to services like Slack and Salesforce, replacing the older model of one-off custom GPTs with agents that can use company data and follow team processes. (openai.com; theverge.com) That changes what buyers compare when they choose a model vendor. The question is no longer only which chatbot writes the best answer, but which platform can reach the right files, respect internal access rules, and trigger work across the tools a company already uses. (openai.com; blog.google) Google has been building toward that pitch since it launched Agentspace in December 2024 as a way for employees and agents to search company knowledge and act on it. OpenAI is making a similar bet that enterprise customers will pay for AI that behaves less like a helper in a chat and more like a managed worker inside the stack. (cloud.google.com; openai.com) The near-term test is whether companies trust these systems with bounded tasks such as drafting reports, updating records, or coordinating approvals without constant human prompting. The companies that win that business are likely to be the ones whose agents can plug into the most data, the most workflows, and the most guardrails. (openai.com; blog.google)
