Dutch AI Startup Raises €1.75M for Healthcare

Amsterdam-based Delphyr, an AI platform that builds AI agents for medical professionals, has raised €1.75 million in a funding round. With backing from the founders of Hugging Face and DEGIRO, the company aims to accelerate its mission to automate administrative tasks and give time back to healthcare workers.

Delphyr's founder and CEO, Michel Abdel Malek, is a former anesthesiologist who was inspired to start the company after a near-critical medication error. The incident, caused by inaccessible patient data, highlighted the severe impact of administrative burdens on patient care and motivated him to build a solution. The investment from Hugging Face's founders aligns with their mission to democratize AI and foster an open ecosystem for its development. Backing a healthcare-specific application like Delphyr extends their reach into a critical sector, promoting the use of open-source principles to solve tangible problems. DEGIRO co-founder Gijs Nagel's participation, through his firm Lenos Equity, reflects a focus on digital security and AI, signaling a strategic interest in companies creating a reliable digital foundation for critical industries. Delphyr is entering a rapidly growing European AI in healthcare market, which was valued at $7.92 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach over $143 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 37.91%. This growth is fueled by the pressing need to improve operational efficiency and address workforce shortages within European health systems. A key feature of Delphyr's platform is "ambient listening," an AI-driven technology that passively captures and transcribes conversations between clinicians and patients into structured clinical notes. This allows physicians to focus on the patient rather than on manual data entry, with studies showing that such technology can save physicians significant time on documentation. Patient consent is required before recording, and the AI is designed to distinguish between clinical discussion and casual conversation. Delphyr's AI agents integrate directly into existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, a crucial factor for adoption as it avoids the need for healthcare professionals to learn new software. The platform is designed to comply with European regulations, including the EU's AI Act, by processing all data within Europe to ensure privacy and security. While Delphyr is an emerging player, the broader AI in healthcare administration space includes companies like Nabla, Abridge, and Tandem Health, which are also focused on reducing the administrative load on clinicians. The market for managing patient records in Europe is estimated to be around €65 billion annually, indicating a substantial opportunity for AI-driven solutions that can automate and streamline these processes.
