First Production Tesla Cybercab Rolls Out with No Steering Wheel

The first production model of the Tesla Cybercab has rolled off the line, and it's built for full autonomy with no steering wheel or pedals. This radical design signals Tesla's confidence in its Full Self-Driving software, reimagining the passenger experience around screens and voice commands for a location-first interface.

The Cybercab's reveal was part of Elon Musk's "We, Robot" event in October 2024, which also showcased the Optimus humanoid robot. The vehicle is the culmination of a goal Musk first outlined in 2016: a shared autonomous ride-hailing network composed of Tesla vehicles. Elon Musk has confirmed the vehicle will be sold for under $30,000 by 2027. This aggressive pricing is aimed at making autonomous transportation widely accessible and disrupting the emerging robotaxi industry. This purpose-built vehicle will join Tesla's existing Robotaxi network, which currently uses modified Model Ys with human safety monitors in Austin and the Bay Area. Tesla plans to expand the service to seven new cities in the first half of 2026, including Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Miami. The production itself is designed for extreme efficiency, using a novel "Unboxed" method where sub-assemblies are built in parallel. Musk has stated the goal is to achieve a production cycle time of under 10 seconds per vehicle, a process closer to manufacturing consumer electronics than traditional cars. Achieving a driverless reality depends entirely on Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. While advancing, FSD is currently classified as a Level 2 driver-assistance system, meaning it requires active driver supervision. Removing the steering wheel and pedals legally and safely requires proving the system is reliable far in excess of a human driver. Tesla enters a competitive space where rivals have already deployed autonomous vehicles. Waymo (Alphabet) operates a commercial Level 4 robotaxi service in several US cities, and Zoox (Amazon) is also developing a purpose-built, bidirectional vehicle with no steering wheel.
