Japan’s Golden Week travel rebound is nearly complete: domestic trips are projected to reach 23.9 million in 2026, almost back to the 24.0 million recorded in 2019. (nippon.com) The estimate comes from JTB Corp., which surveyed 10,000 people from March 6 to 11 about travel plans for the 13-day period from April 25 to May 7. JTB said 23.4% of respondents expected to travel, up 2.5 percentage points from a year earlier. (nippon.com) Golden Week itself centers on a five-day holiday stretch from May 2 to May 6 in 2026, and JTB said the calendar makes it easier to build a longer break by adding vacation days around it. Total travelers, including overseas trips, are projected to rise 1.9% from last year to 24.47 million. (nippon.com; japannews.yomiuri.co.jp) The increase would mark a sixth straight annual rise in domestic Golden Week travel after the pandemic slump. Nippon.com said the 2026 total is “nearly comparable” to 2019, the last pre-COVID benchmark. (nippon.com) More people are traveling, but each domestic traveler is expected to spend less. JTB projects average domestic spending at ¥46,000, down 2.1% from 2025 and the first decline since 2020. (nippon.com; japannews.yomiuri.co.jp) JTB tied the softer spending to shorter and cheaper trips. The share of one-night, two-day domestic trips rose 6.4 points to 39.9%, while three-night, four-day trips fell 3.6 points to 16.2%. (nippon.com) The company also said travelers are choosing closer destinations and using their own cars more often. Yomiuri reported that inflation has kept hotel and other travel costs high even as households try to hold down budgets. (japannews.yomiuri.co.jp; travelvoice.jp) Outbound travel is rising faster than domestic travel, though from a much smaller base. JTB expects overseas trips to climb 8.5% to 572,000, with average spending up 2.2% to ¥329,000 per person. (nippon.com; travelvoice.jp) South Korea, Taiwan and China ranked as the most popular overseas destinations in Nippon.com’s account of the JTB data, while Travel Voice said South Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia remained the main picks. Both reports said nearby Asian destinations dominate demand. (nippon.com; travelvoice.jp) The 2026 picture is a holiday season that looks more like 2019 in headcount than in spending. Japan is getting its Golden Week crowds back, but JTB’s forecast points to a more frugal version of the rebound. (nippon.com)
