Durant Drops 40 in Rockets Comeback

Kevin Durant scored a season-high 40 points to lead the Houston Rockets to a 113-108 comeback win over the Orlando Magic. The Rockets erased a double-digit deficit in the final quarter, with Durant taking over offensively in crunch time. He also became the oldest Rocket to score 40 points and passed 32,000 career points.

The comeback was sparked by a massive 21-0 run in the third quarter, turning a 19-point deficit into a lead in just three and a half minutes. Houston's defense was a key factor, holding an opponent under 110 points for the ninth consecutive game. This win marks the Rockets' third straight victory, improving their record to 37-21 and solidifying their position as the third seed in the Western Conference. Rookie guard Reed Sheppard was instrumental in the rally, scoring 20 points off the bench and hitting five crucial three-pointers in the second half. Sheppard scored 11 of his points during the decisive 21-0 run. His performance earned him the trust of coach Ime Udoka, who kept him in to close out the game, a notable departure from the usual rotation. With this performance, the 37-year-old Durant became the oldest player in Houston Rockets history to score 40 points in a game. He joins an elite club as the sixth player in NBA history to surpass 32,000 career points, a list that includes LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan. Durant is now only 286 points away from passing Michael Jordan for fifth on the all-time scoring list. This was also Durant's 431st career 30-point game, tying him with Kobe Bryant for the fifth-most in NBA history. The 40-point effort made him the first player in league history to score 40 points in a regular-season game for five different franchises. The loss dropped the Orlando Magic to 31-27 on the season, placing them seventh in the Eastern Conference standings. Desmond Bane led the Magic with 30 points, while Paolo Banchero contributed 19 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds. The Magic had been on a four-game winning streak on the road before this loss at home. The Rockets will look to extend their winning streak when they face the Miami Heat next on the road. Meanwhile, the Orlando Magic will aim to bounce back when they host the Detroit Pistons.
