LA Builder Opens Sites for Firefighter Training
A Los Angeles builder has opened active construction sites to local firefighters for wildfire response training. The proactive collaboration aims to improve emergency preparedness and building resilience in fire-prone areas, reflecting growing climate risk considerations in construction practices.
The Los Angeles-based builder providing these training sites is MY Home Builders. This initiative allows firefighters to train in real residential homes that are actively being remodeled, offering a more realistic experience than simulated environments. The hands-on training focuses on crucial skills for battling fires in residential structures, including navigating home layouts, practicing ventilation and roof access techniques, and moving through confined spaces. Firefighters also gain experience with structural elements found in modern remodels within the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). This collaboration comes as Southern California grapples with the continued threat of intense wildfires, particularly in areas designated as High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. In these zones, building codes now mandate enhanced fire-resilient construction methods for new builds and major renovations. These updated building standards, found in Chapter 7A of the California Building Code, require materials and designs that resist ignition from embers, a primary cause of home loss during wildfires. This includes the use of fire-rated roofing, ember-resistant vents, and ignition-resistant siding. Homes built after the implementation of these codes in 2008 are significantly more likely to survive a wildfire. The initiative reflects a broader trend of increasing collaboration between emergency services, builders, and homeowners to mitigate wildfire risks. Educational programs on fire-resilient landscaping and construction are also being offered to homeowners and construction professionals in the region.
