H Mart to Open Largest U.S. Store in Fremont

Asian supermarket chain H Mart is set to open its largest U.S. location in Fremont, California. The new store will cater to the region's diverse population with an extensive variety of Asian groceries and goods. The expansion reflects the growing demand for international food products in the Bay Area.

The new H Mart will be a two-story, 100,000-square-foot flagship store, making it the largest in the United States. This project marks the largest investment in the company's history and will serve as a prototype for future locations. The store will be located in the Pacific Commons Shopping Center, taking over a formerly vacant Kohl's building at 43782 Christy Street. Fremont's Mayor, Raj Salwan, praised the project as a "transformative investment" and an "innovative reuse of a vacant large-format retail space." Construction is slated to begin in late 2026, with a projected opening in late 2027. The first floor will house the grocery store, while the second level will feature a food hall, a bar, dine-in restaurants, and communal areas. This will be H Mart's first location to incorporate a dedicated food hall with a mix of fast-casual and full-service dining options, alongside entertainment offerings. The new establishment will be the fourth H Mart in the Bay Area, joining existing stores in San Francisco, Dublin, and two in San Jose. Founded in Woodside, Queens, in 1982, H Mart has grown to over 97 locations across the U.S. The chain is known for its wide selection of Asian foods and also carries Western groceries. The Fremont location is part of a broader trend of expanding Asian supermarket chains in the Bay Area, including Jagalchi, T&T Supermarket, and Tokyo Central. The Pacific Commons shopping center also recently welcomed the largest U.S. store for the Chinese lifestyle brand Miniso.
