The university also said a private family interment will take place later. (uwaterloo.ca) The service follows Shortreed’s death on April 15. The retired civil and environmental engineering professor joined Waterloo in 1965 as an assistant professor, became an associate professor in 1969 and a full professor in 1977. (uwaterloo.ca; uwaterloo.ca) Shortreed’s work ranged across transportation, freeway simulation, risk analysis, hazardous-goods movement and urban transit. Waterloo said he also helped launch the university’s Institute for Risk Research and later served as its director. (uwaterloo.ca) His career extended beyond campus into municipal and national public service. Waterloo said he served on the Waterloo Planning Board, sat on Waterloo City Council after a 1979 appointment, and later worked on the Commission of Inquiry on the Blood System in Canada during the tainted-blood crisis. (uwaterloo.ca) The memorial notice appeared in the University of Waterloo’s Daily Bulletin on Wednesday, April 22, one day before the service. The same bulletin carried a separate remembrance that described Shortreed as a retired professor in civil and environmental engineering. (uwaterloo.ca) Thursday’s service closes a six-decade connection between Shortreed and the university and the city he served in both academic and civic roles. (uwaterloo.ca)
