Manila and Cebu enter Michelin
The first Michelin Guide selection for Manila, its environs and Cebu was announced this year and was called a ‘historic moment’ by Senator Loren Legarda as part of Filipino Food Month. Michelin’s first Philippines guide has put Manila, its surrounding areas and Cebu into the same global restaurant ranking system used in Tokyo, Paris and Singapore. (michelin.com) Michelin unveiled the 2026 Manila and Environs & Cebu selection on October 30, 2025, at the Manila Marriott Hotel in Newport World Resorts. The debut list covered 108 establishments: 1 restaurant with two Michelin stars, 8 with one star, 25 Bib Gourmand picks and 74 Michelin Selected entries. (michelin.com) The guide split the field between 90 restaurants in Manila and its environs and 18 in Cebu. Michelin’s published lineup says Helm received two stars, while one-star awards went to restaurants including Hapag, Toyo Eatery, Metiz and several hotel dining rooms. (guide.michelin.com) Bib Gourmand is Michelin’s value category, used for places inspectors judge to offer good food at a moderate price. In the Philippines debut, Michelin gave that designation to 25 restaurants, including street-food and casual spots alongside more formal dining rooms. (guide.michelin.com) For diners, the change is not just a list of winners. Michelin now has a formal Philippines landing page, restaurant database and inspector reviews, which gives Manila and Cebu a permanent place inside a guide used by international travelers planning where to eat. (guide.michelin.com ) (guide.michelin.com) The timing also matters inside the Philippines. Senator Loren Legarda, speaking during Filipino Food Month this April, called the first Michelin selection for Manila, Environs and Cebu a “historic moment” and tied it to a wider push to protect culinary heritage and support farmers and fisherfolk. (manilatimes.net) Michelin’s arrival followed months of signaling that the company was studying the market, then moved quickly into a full launch rather than a limited preview. Michelin now describes Philippine cooking as a cuisine moving across regions, traditions and dining rooms, with Manila and coastal Cebu as two of the clearest showcases. (guide.michelin.com 1) (guide.michelin.com 2) The guide also brought its side awards into the country. Michelin said the first edition included one Green Star for sustainability and three special awards covering young chef, service and exceptional cocktails. (michelin.com) What happens next is simpler than the ceremony: inspectors return, restaurants are regraded and the map either widens or tightens. For now, Manila and Cebu are no longer outside Michelin’s orbit; they are in the book. (michelin.com)
