Chinese Dropout Founder Scales AI in a SV

Forbes highlighted the story of Luyu Zhang, a middle-school dropout from China who is now scaling his AI startup, Dify, in Silicon Valley. His journey exemplifies the global nature of founder talent and the unique challenges of bridging the Chinese and American tech ecosystems.

Luyu Zhang, a coding prodigy who dropped out of middle school in China, was already earning more than his civil servant father by coding websites for about $1,000 a month. Unable to tolerate the rigid Chinese schooling system, he left and later landed a product leadership role at Tencent before founding Dify. Dify is an open-source, low-code platform designed to help developers build and deploy AI applications without extensive backend coding. It functions as a middleware layer, connecting large language models with applications and simplifying the development process. The platform supports various models like GPT and Llama2, and integrates features like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines and AI agent workflows. The startup recently raised $30 million at a $180 million valuation from investors including HSG (formerly Sequoia Capital China), GL Ventures, and 5Y Capital. Dify is already profitable, employing 100 people and serving over 280 enterprise clients, including major names like Volvo, ThermoFisher Scientific, and Novartis. Zhang's move to the U.S., despite barely speaking English, is driven by his belief that to build a global AI infrastructure company, one must be where the world is competing. He likens Silicon Valley to the "Olympic arena" for AI, a sentiment shared by a growing number of Chinese AI founders relocating their companies to the United States. The move is part of a larger trend of Chinese entrepreneurs moving to the U.S. amid tightening export controls on advanced AI chips and venture funding challenges in China. Investor Lake Dai notes that in the past two years, at least 100 Chinese entrepreneurs have inquired about moving to the States.
