Walmart Augments Workforce with AI Training

Walmart's latest operational update reveals it is using AI and automation to augment, not replace, its 1.6 million U.S. employees. The company is providing free Google AI training to its workforce to streamline tasks and improve data-driven decision-making. This technology-enabled approach has contributed to higher online grocery sales and expedited delivery times that now average under one hour for same-day orders.

- The company has rolled out a proprietary generative AI tool called "My Assistant" to 50,000 U.S. corporate employees through its Me@Campus app to help with tasks like summarizing documents and drafting content. This tool is being expanded to an additional 25,000 employees in 10 other countries, including Canada, Mexico, and South Africa. - This initiative is part of a broader strategy that will see approximately 65% of Walmart's stores automated by the end of 2026. The company's investment in technology and automation for fiscal year 2022 was $14 billion. - In a partnership with OpenAI, Walmart will offer a customized AI certification program to its U.S. employees starting in 2026. This is part of a nearly $1 billion commitment to skills training through 2026. - For store associates, an AI-driven task management system for overnight stocking has reduced shift planning time from 90 minutes to 30. More than 900,000 associates use a conversational AI tool weekly to ask operational questions. - Walmart is also deploying a tool named "Sidekick" which uses AI to suggest the next best action for an employee, helping to guide newer associates through tasks. The system is designed as a support tool and does not generate operational metrics for performance tracking. - In its supply chain, Walmart uses AI-powered chatbots for supplier negotiations, which has resulted in agreements with 68% of suppliers approached and achieved a 1.5% cost reduction. - The company is also leveraging AI to enhance its logistics, using "adaptive large neighborhood search models" to help drivers find the most efficient delivery routes. This has contributed to a 15% improvement in logistics costs and a 65% increase in service levels. - A customer-facing generative AI assistant named "Sparky" has been introduced in the Walmart mobile app to provide product recommendations and answer queries.
