Largest H Mart in U.S. to Open in Bay Area
The Korean supermarket chain H Mart is set to open its largest U.S. location in the Bay Area. The new store will offer local residents a wide selection of fresh produce, Asian foods, and other specialty goods.
- The 100,000-square-foot, two-story store will be located in the Pacific Commons Shopping Center in Fremont, taking over a former Kohl's building at 43782 Christy St. - This location represents the largest investment in H Mart's history and will be the flagship of a new "multi-level prototype." - The ground floor will house the grocery store, while the second floor will feature a food hall with a mix of fast-casual and full-service restaurants, a bar, and entertainment offerings. - Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026, though the company has not yet provided a projected opening date. - Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan called the project a "transformative investment" and highlighted the strategic reuse of a large retail space that had been vacant. - This will be H Mart's fourth location in the Bay Area, adding to stores in San Francisco, San Jose, and a yet-to-open store in Dublin which has faced delays. - The expansion comes as other Asian grocery chains, such as T&T Supermarket and Tokyo Central, are also growing their presence in the Bay Area. - In 2024, H Mart purchased the Oceanview Village Shopping Center, which houses its San Francisco store, for $37 million.
