Sun-Maid Hires Earthbound for Brand Expansion
Sun-Maid Growers of California has appointed Earthbound Brands as its exclusive licensing agency. The partnership signals a strategic push by the iconic raisin brand to expand into new food, beverage, and lifestyle product categories.
This move comes as the 112-year-old grower-owned cooperative faces increasing price pressure from overseas raisin producers. The U.S. share of global raisin production has fallen from over 50% to just 15%, making it crucial for Sun-Maid to build brand value beyond the commodity market. Sun-Maid has been actively working to innovate its product line to appeal to modern consumers. Recent launches include "Fruity Raisin Snacks" and a premium "Farmstand Reserve" line with flavors like sea salt and cocoa. In 2021, the company made its first-ever acquisition, buying Plum Organics to connect with families and younger children. Earthbound Brands is a seasoned player in brand extensions, founded in 2000. The agency is known for pioneering the "class-to-mass" movement by facilitating the breakthrough partnership between designer Isaac Mizrahi and Target. The agency has a long history of creating major retail programs, including developing the Better Homes and Gardens home collection for Walmart. Their portfolio is diverse, featuring work with brands like the Girl Scouts, Hallmark, WD-40, and celebrities such as Drew Barrymore and Martha Stewart. The partnership taps into a booming food and beverage licensing market, which has become one of the top three fastest-growing sectors in brand licensing. The industry generated $7.4 billion in retail sales from licensed products last year, driven by consumer interest in experiencing familiar brands in new ways. This trend is fueled by a consumer desire for nostalgia, convenience, and new flavor experiences. Successful brand extensions in this space go beyond simply placing a logo on a new product, often involving collaborations that create novel items, like Baileys-branded ice cream or Wendy's Thin Mints-inspired Frosty.
