On-Chain AI Agent Infrastructure Proliferates
Multiple protocols have rolled out infrastructure for autonomous on-chain AI agents. Uniswap Labs launched seven AI agent skills for automated trading and liquidity management, while Mantle deployed the ERC-8004 standard to give agents on-chain identity. Additionally, Virtuals Protocol has launched its AI Revenue Network to help agents monetize on-chain activities.
- The ERC-8004 standard deployed by Mantle is a broader Ethereum initiative that went live on the mainnet in late January 2026 to provide a trust layer for agents. It establishes three on-chain registries: an Identity Registry using NFTs, a Reputation Registry for a portable track record, and a Validation Registry for cryptographic proof-of-work. - Uniswap's seven AI skills are open-source tools released on GitHub, designed to standardize machine interactions with the DEX. They cover specific functions like v4 security foundations, contract deployment, EVM integration via "viem", and planners for swap execution and liquidity provisioning. - The Virtuals Protocol's AI Revenue Network is underpinned by its Agent Commerce Protocol (ACP), a standard for agent-to-agent transactions covering negotiation, escrow, and settlement. The protocol aims to measure and grow "Agentic GDP" (aGDP)—the total economic value created by autonomous agents. - Since the ERC-8004 standard went live, community trackers have registered more than 21,000 AI agents across Ethereum and other EVM networks in the first few weeks. - The Virtuals Protocol claims to power an economy of over 18,000 agents and is funding its Revenue Network with up to $1 million per month from protocol revenue to incentivize agent activity. - Other active protocols in the on-chain AI agent space include Fetch.ai, which provides the uAgents framework for building multi-agent systems, and Autonolas (OLAS), which offers an on-chain protocol for coordinating, securing, and managing autonomous software services. - Mantle's Head of Product, Joshua Cheong, stated the goal of deploying ERC-8004 is to provide AI agents with the "credentials they need to manage real capital" and create a "verifiable workforce that can navigate compliance, liquidity, and settlement at scale." - The infrastructure push aims to solve the "visibility crisis" that has prevented agents from participating in high-stakes financial markets, such as those involving real-world assets (RWAs), where verifiable performance histories are required.
