SXSW Film Fest Underway

The 40th South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin is underway, with its film segment drawing industry attention. Notable entries include *A Cowboy in London*, *They Will Kill You*, *Sender*, *Black Zombie*, *Death of a Unicorn*, and *Summer of 69*.

SXSW, which began in 1987 as a local music festival, has grown into a global event celebrating film, interactive media, and music. The festival was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's film "North by Northwest". The initial expectation of 150 attendees in 1987 was shattered when over 700 people showed up. SXSW's film component was added in 1994, providing a platform for independent filmmakers. The festival has been instrumental in launching careers and showcasing diverse stories. Notable films that premiered at SXSW include *Bridesmaids*, *21 Jump Street*, and *Knocked Up*. The festival significantly impacts Austin's economy. In 2023, SXSW generated an estimated $380.9 million in economic activity for the city. This figure includes attendee spending, SXSW's operational expenditures, and partner contributions. The event also boosts tourism and hospitality, generating hotel occupancy tax revenue for the city. SXSW's influence extends beyond Austin, with events like SXSW London and SXSW Sydney. SXSW London, entering its second edition in June 2026, will showcase new work across film, series, and XR. In 2025, SXSW London welcomed over 20,000 people and screened over 100 films.
