Fantasy Reader Praises Gemmell Classic

Winter is Coming reviewed *Sword in the Storm*, the first in David Gemmell's Rigante series, depicting a clash between nature-based old ways and a violent empire. The review cements it as heroic fantasy canon for readers seeking action-packed adventure.

*Sword in the Storm* is the first of four books in the Rigante series, which is split into two parts; the first two books are set in an Iron Age-equivalent era, while the latter two jump forward several centuries to a time of muskets and cavalry charges. The series draws heavily on Gaelic and Celtic mythology, with the Rigante themselves being a fictional representation of ancient Scottish and Irish clans. The book's author, David Gemmell, is considered a master of the heroic fantasy subgenre. His works often explore themes of honor, loyalty, redemption, and the flawed nature of heroes. Before becoming a full-time author with the publication of his third book, Gemmell worked as a journalist and newspaper editor. The heroic fantasy genre, in which Gemmell was a pioneer, sits between the world-ending stakes of high fantasy and the morally ambiguous personal goals of low fantasy. It focuses on the personal journey of a heroic protagonist whose goals are generally morally sound, often set in an adventure-friendly world with untamed wilderness. The antagonists in *Sword in the Storm*, the Stone empire, are heavily based on the Roman Empire, known for their efficient and brutal conquests and road-building. This historical parallel grounds the fantasy narrative in a recognizable conflict between a tribal, nature-based society and a technologically advanced, expansionist empire. The Rigante series, and Gemmell's work in general, is known for its fast-paced action and visceral combat. Gemmell's own harsh upbringing and experience as a nightclub bouncer informed his understanding of violence, which he translated into his writing. Following his death in 2006, the David Gemmell Awards for Fantasy were established to "restore fantasy to its proper place in the literary pantheon" and were awarded from 2009 to 2018. His first novel, *Legend*, published in 1984, has become a classic of the genre, and his books have sold over one million copies worldwide.
