Melbourne Terrace Becomes Teenage Hub

A Carlton terrace was transformed into a modern family hub designed specifically as a "teenage mess hall." The renovation emphasizes communal kitchen and dining spaces that foster family togetherness while accommodating the chaos of teenage life.

The architectural firm behind the project, Clare Cousins Architects, took on the challenge of renovating two previously amalgamated single-fronted terraces. The firm's work often focuses on how materials and space can influence well-being, a philosophy evident in this project. One of the renovated terraces was transformed into the new family home, while the other was redeveloped as an investment property. A primary objective for the clients, a couple with adult children, was to introduce natural light and a feeling of spaciousness into the characteristically long and narrow terrace house. To achieve this, the design incorporates a distinctive folding roofline and clustered windows that capture northern light for both levels of the home. This approach creates a sense of openness, a common challenge in inner-city terrace housing. A key architectural feature is a glazed "cut" at the junction between the original structure and the new extension. This design element serves a dual purpose: it marks the transition from old to new and acts as an informal entry point from the laneway, drawing light into the center of the house. The material palette of lighter masonry and blonde timber further enhances the feeling of spaciousness and light. The design aligns with modern trends for multi-generational homes, which emphasize a balance between private and communal areas. While providing spaces for independence, the open-plan kitchen and dining areas are crucial for encouraging family interaction. The creation of adaptable, open-plan living spaces is a key strategy for accommodating the evolving needs of a family with older children.
