Anthropic has put Claude directly inside Microsoft Word, starting a beta for Claude Team and Enterprise customers. (claude.com) The add-in opens as a sidebar inside Word and lets users select text, describe an edit, and see the result as a native tracked change in Word’s review pane. Anthropic says Claude also reads Word comments, edits the anchored text, and replies in the comment thread with what it changed. (claude.com) Anthropic says the tool preserves heading styles, numbering schemes, bullet formatting, and defined terms while editing. The company says it currently supports `.docx` and `.docm` files, with older formats like `.doc` and `.rtf` needing conversion first. (claude.com) The Word launch pushes Claude into the format many large companies already use for contracts, board materials, policy drafts, and financial memos. Anthropic’s product page highlights contract review, status memos, research briefs, consistency checks, and cross-reference fixes as core use cases. (claude.com) Anthropic is pitching the add-in around reviewable edits rather than one-shot text generation. Its Microsoft AppSource listing says every edit can land as a tracked change that users review before accepting, a workflow aimed at legal and other document-heavy teams that already live in Word’s markup system. (marketplace.microsoft.com) The release also fills in a gap in Anthropic’s Office strategy. Anthropic already had official add-ins for Excel and PowerPoint, and its Word page says Claude can now pass context across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in one conversation. (marketplace.microsoft.com) (claude.com 1) (claude.com 2) Anthropic is also tying the Office push to enterprise procurement and compliance. Its Word page says users can sign in with a Claude account or connect through an existing cloud provider, and Anthropic separately offers Claude through Microsoft Foundry, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud Vertex AI. (claude.com 1) (claude.com 2) (learn.microsoft.com) The company is still framing the product as assistive, not autonomous. Anthropic says Claude for Word works within an organization’s existing security framework, but it also warns that Claude can make mistakes and says users should review tracked changes before accepting them, especially in client-facing documents. (claude.com) For Anthropic, the bet is that document work will stay inside Word, not in a separate chat window. Claude is now being sold less as a chatbot and more as a co-editor that writes in the file companies already have to send, redline, and sign. (claude.com)
