Hyrox Racing Booms Worldwide

Hyrox was co-founded by Christian Toetzke, an experienced race organizer, and Moritz Fürste, a three-time Olympic medalist in field hockey. The first-ever Hyrox event took place in Hamburg, Germany, in 2018 with about 650 participants. The name itself is a blend of "hybrid" and "rockstar," reflecting the combination of different fitness disciplines. The growth of Hyrox has been exponential. From the initial 650 competitors, the number of participants grew to 175,000 in the 2023/2024 season. Projections for the 2024/2025 season anticipate a staggering 425,000 participants. This rapid expansion is also reflected in the number of events, with 85 planned for the 2024/2025 season across various countries. In 2025, the business is expected to generate approximately $140 million in revenue. The competition's format is a key part of its broad appeal. It consists of a 1-kilometer run followed by a functional workout station, a sequence that is repeated eight times. This standardized structure allows participants to benchmark their performance against others globally. The accessibility is enhanced by offering different divisions, including individual, doubles, and relay teams, with a completion rate of 98% due to the absence of a time limit. The demographic of Hyrox participants is diverse. While initially more male-dominated, female participation has grown to about 38%. A significant portion of competitors, two-thirds, are over the age of 30, with the oldest known finisher being 74 years old. This wide age range and inclusive approach have helped Hyrox establish a strong community feel at its events. In the landscape of fitness competitions, Hyrox has positioned itself as a unique challenge. Unlike the varied and often highly technical workouts of CrossFit, Hyrox focuses on a consistent set of functional movements combined with endurance running. Compared to obstacle course races like Spartan Race, which involve unpredictable terrain and obstacles, Hyrox offers a more predictable and measurable test of fitness in an indoor setting. The business model extends beyond the events themselves. Hyrox has a growing network of over 5,000 affiliated gyms worldwide that offer official training classes. This creates a direct channel for athletes to prepare for the competitions and fosters a sense of community. The company has also secured major sponsorships with brands like Puma and Red Bull, further solidifying its position in the global fitness market. Some of the larger events have become massive fitness festivals, with the London event in late 2024 expecting over 15,000 racers and 30,000 spectators.
