Ascendant Promises 'Most Chaotic' FPS

Ascendant launches as 2026's "most chaotic competitive FPS" with a wild twist — four teams per match and maps that change every round. This unpredictable format promises fresh tactical challenges for competitive shooter fans tired of static gameplay.

Developed by UK-based indie studio PlayFusion, some of whom previously worked on *RuneScape* at Jagex, *Ascendant* is officially billed as the "world's first Adaption Shooter." The game is targeting a full launch in the first quarter of 2026 and is planned for release on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, with console versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox X to follow. The core gameplay is a high-stakes, modified version of capture-the-flag called "Battle of the Biocores." Four squads of three players each are dropped into a "biopunk" arena and must compete to secure a set number of biocores—typically winning by capturing two. This 3v3v3v3 format ensures that teams are constantly at risk of being attacked from multiple angles. What fuels the "chaotic" label are the random, mid-match events designed to constantly alter the battlefield and force players to adapt their strategies. These can range from toxic storms and lethal airstrikes to the sudden appearance of giant mutant wildlife that creates an additional, unpredictable threat for all teams. Player versus environment (PvE) elements are a significant factor, as squads can earn a mid-match currency called "power" by killing mutants. This power can then be spent on upgrades, traps, or other tactical advantages, adding a layer of in-game progression to each match. Weapon customization is a key feature, with the developers promising over 3 million possible combinations for players to create their own unique firearms. The goal is to allow for highly personalized loadouts, from poison-spitting SMGs to sniper rifles that fire explosives. Beyond the core combat, *Ascendant* will also feature a social hub. This area will allow players to interact, view leaderboards, manage their loadouts, and even engage in 1v1 duels in a zone called the Thunderdome before queueing for the main event.
