Grocery Outlet Stores in Contra Costa Safe Amid Closures

Discount grocer Grocery Outlet is closing 36 underperforming stores nationwide, but local bargain hunters can relax. All six Contra Costa County locations, including those in Antioch and Brentwood, are not on the chopping block, ensuring a key budget-friendly shopping option remains available for Fremont-area families.

The nationwide closures target 36 financially underperforming stores that lacked a "viable path to sustained profitability," according to company executives. CEO Jason Potter stated the move was a "direct correction" after admitting, "It's clear now that we expanded too quickly." This restructuring follows a reported net loss of $225 million for fiscal year 2025, a sharp downturn from the $39 million net income reported in 2024. The company's stock value has also fallen by more than 43% over the past year. Executives pointed to intensified pressure on their core customers, delays in federally-funded benefits like SNAP, and aggressive promotional competition from other retailers as significant challenges in late 2025. Despite the closures, Grocery Outlet's fundamental business model remains unchanged. The company relies on "opportunistic buying," purchasing overstock and closeout brand-name products and selling them for 40% to 70% less than conventional grocers. Each store is run by an independent operator, a model designed to tailor product selection to the tastes of the local community. Looking ahead, the company is not halting growth entirely. It still plans to open 30 to 33 new stores in 2026, focusing on a more disciplined strategy that clusters locations to better leverage supply chains and marketing.
