OpenAI links ChatGPT to banks

- OpenAI said on May 15 it began previewing personal finance tools in ChatGPT, letting U.S. Pro users link accounts through Plaid. - Plaid said the integration can connect ChatGPT to more than 12,000 financial institutions, while OpenAI limited the launch to U.S. Pro users. - OpenAI’s help pages say the rollout is gradual on web and iOS, and some eligible users may not see it yet.

OpenAI said on May 15 that it had begun previewing a personal finance experience inside ChatGPT for Pro users in the United States, adding bank-account linking through Plaid and a dashboard for spending, bills, subscriptions and investments. The company said users can ask questions based on their own financial data after connecting accounts and granting permission to share that information with ChatGPT. Plaid said the feature gives users “real-time answers and insights” tied to their actual finances. OpenAI’s help documentation says the launch is available on web and iOS and is rolling out gradually. ### Which ChatGPT users can actually connect a bank account? OpenAI said the feature is limited to ChatGPT Pro users in the U.S. during the preview. The company’s product post says users can securely connect financial accounts, view where their money is going and ask questions grounded in their financial context, goals and priorities. (openai.com) The Help Center says Finances in ChatGPT is available only to Pro users in the United States, on web and iOS. OpenAI also said some eligible users may not see the feature immediately because the rollout is gradual. ### What does Plaid do in this setup? Plaid said on May 15 that it powers the account-linking layer for the new ChatGPT finance experience. (openai.com) Its blog post said U.S. Pro users can connect accounts with Plaid and receive answers and insights tailored to their financial picture rather than general guidance. OpenAI’s Help Center says Plaid lets users connect accounts at more than 12,000 supported banks, credit-card issuers, brokerages and other financial institutions. (help.openai.com) The same page says users give permission to share that data with ChatGPT so the system can use their financial context to provide more personalized answers. (plaid.com) ### What can ChatGPT show once accounts are linked? OpenAI’s release notes say the Finances page can show spending, bills, subscriptions, net worth and investment information in one place. The notes say users can ask questions directly in ChatGPT or use the page to review upcoming payments, recurring charges, budgets, savings goals and debt-payoff plans. (help.openai.com) TechCrunch reported on May 15 that OpenAI launched the tools in preview for U.S. Pro subscribers, allowing questions ranging from spending analysis to future financial planning. American Banker reported on May 19 that select users can now connect bank accounts for personal money-management advice based on financial history. (help.openai.com) ### Why is France missing from the bank list? Clubic reported on May 18 that ChatGPT can connect to about 12,000 banks but that none of those connections include a French bank. The publication attributed that gap to regulatory and market structure barriers in France, where account-aggregation rules and local providers shape access differently from the U.S. Plaid-led model. (techcrunch.com) Clubic’s report does not say OpenAI has canceled a France launch. It says the current rollout does not include French banks even as OpenAI expands other ChatGPT features in parts of Europe. ### How does this fit into OpenAI’s broader push into finance? OpenAI said in March that it was adding financial data integrations directly in ChatGPT for services including FactSet, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, Daloopa and S&P Global, and later updated that post to say ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets became generally available across plans on May 5. (clubic.com) Those products were aimed at professional financial workflows, while the new Plaid integration is focused on consumer personal finance inside ChatGPT. May 15 is the key next milestone disclosed by the company so far: that is when the preview began for U.S. Pro users. OpenAI’s help pages say the web and iOS rollout remains gradual, and Plaid remains the named partner handling account connections to supported institutions. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2)
