Run 'Empathy Charades' to Cut Disruptions

New guidance suggests using specific group exercises to proactively build emotional intelligence and prevent disruptions. Activities like "Feelings Circle" or "Empathy Charades" help students practice naming emotions and taking others' perspectives.

These social-emotional learning (SEL) exercises are core components of the CASEL Framework, developed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. This framework outlines five key competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. "Empathy Charades" directly builds social awareness by having students act out scenarios and emotions without words. This encourages them to interpret nonverbal cues and consider others' perspectives, followed by a discussion on how to respond with empathy in each situation. "Feelings Circle," often a daily morning routine, strengthens self-awareness and self-management. By providing a safe space for students to identify and verbalize their emotions, it helps them understand that feelings are fluid and can be regulated. Integrating SEL into STEAM curricula is critical because complex, collaborative projects require more than just technical skill. Skills like managing frustration, communicating ideas, and giving and receiving feedback are essential for successful teamwork in a STEAM context. Research shows a strong correlation between well-developed emotional intelligence and academic success. A meta-analysis of school-based SEL programs found that students showed significant improvements in self-efficacy and academic performance. For educators, a focus on their own emotional intelligence is equally important. Teachers with strong EI skills report better relationships with students, experience less burnout, and are more effective at creating a positive and safe learning environment.
