Google adds restaurant booking in AI Mode

Google has introduced agentic capabilities in its AI Mode, starting with the ability to book restaurants in the UK, a move that shifts search from information to execution. The feature is an early example of ‘search as task completion’ rather than just referral. (restauranttechnologynews.com)

Google has started letting people in the United Kingdom use AI Mode in Search to find and book restaurant tables without leaving Google. (blog.google) Google said the feature began rolling out on April 10, 2026, and works inside AI Mode, the conversational version of Search that already runs as a tab in U.K. search results and in the Google app. (blog.google 1) (blog.google 2) In its announcement, Google said people can ask for a table by date, time, group size, dietary needs and other preferences, then move from a search prompt to a completed reservation in “just a few steps.” Google Trends data cited by the company said searches for “when to book a table” in the United Kingdom are up 140% this year. (blog.google) The change extends a service Google already offered through Reserve with Google, which lets people book local businesses through Search or Maps when the business uses a supported scheduling provider. AI Mode adds a layer that can interpret a longer request and carry out more of the booking flow inside the search experience. (support.google.com 1) (support.google.com 2) Google has been moving AI Mode beyond summaries and links for months. In a September 2025 product update, the company said agentic features in the United States would help Google AI Ultra subscribers with restaurant reservations, event tickets, and beauty and wellness appointments. (blog.google) Google’s help pages now describe “Agentic capabilities in AI Mode” as an experiment in Search Labs, with examples that include finding restaurant reservations, concert tickets and appointments. The company also says AI Mode can make mistakes and is still an early-stage product that it plans to refine and expand. (support.google.com 1) (support.google.com 2) That puts this restaurant feature in the middle of a broader shift in Google Search. When Google introduced AI Mode in 2025, it said the product was built for longer, multi-part questions and used a “query fan-out” system that breaks a prompt into subtopics and runs multiple searches on a user’s behalf. (blog.google) (blog.google) Google has also been widening where AI Mode is available. The company said in late 2025 that AI Mode had expanded to more than 35 new languages and over 40 new countries and territories, reaching more than 200 markets in total, after first rolling out in the United Kingdom in 2025. (blog.google) (blog.google) For restaurant discovery, that means Google is no longer only pointing diners to other sites. In the United Kingdom, it is now trying to turn a search box into the place where the booking itself gets done. (blog.google)
