Founding GNC role posted in LA startup

A Los Angeles aerospace startup advertised a founding Guidance, Navigation & Control engineer role offering ownership from simulation through flight tests. (x.com) The posting was highlighted on social feeds as a hands-on opportunity that could suit students building aerodynamics-adjacent portfolios. (x.com)

A Los Angeles-area defense startup is recruiting a founding Guidance, Navigation and Control engineer to build the software that steers an interceptor from simulation to flight test. (approach-ventures.app.loxo.co) Guidance, Navigation and Control is the part of an aircraft or spacecraft stack that decides where a vehicle is, where it should go, and how to move its control surfaces or thrusters to get there. The El Segundo role says that engineer would “own the full GNC stack” for an on-site, venture-backed team building autonomous systems for “high-speed, contested environments.” (approach-ventures.app.loxo.co) The job posting lists work on midcourse and terminal guidance, state estimation, sensor fusion, actuator models, and high-fidelity six-degrees-of-freedom simulation. It also says the hire would support hardware-in-the-loop testing and ground and flight-software refinement, which are the steps used to move control code from a model into real hardware. (approach-ventures.app.loxo.co) A separate industry newsletter described the opening in March 2026 as a “FOUNDING GNC ENGINEER” role at a seed-stage space-defense startup in Los Angeles. That listing said the company is developing “autonomous orbital-intercept systems” aimed at hypersonic and ballistic threats. (fieldofview.beehiiv.com) That language places the opening inside a fast-growing Southern California defense corridor centered on El Segundo, Hawthorne, Long Beach, and nearby aerospace hubs. Current listings from companies including K2 Space, Chaos Industries, Skyryse, and Hermeus show the region is hiring across Guidance, Navigation and Control, avionics, flight software, and test roles. (k2space.com, job-boards.greenhouse.io, skyryse.com, jobs.lever.co) The technical demands in the posting are unusually broad for a single engineer. The company wants one person to handle guidance algorithms, navigation filters, control laws, simulation, and test support, with tools including MATLAB, Simulink, Python, or C++, plus experience with nonlinear dynamics and quaternion math used to track 3D orientation. (approach-ventures.app.loxo.co) The role also reflects how early-stage aerospace startups are using “founding engineer” titles to signal both scope and scarcity. K2 Space’s careers page says it offers “small teams” and “real ownership,” a hiring pitch that has become common as venture-backed aerospace companies compete with larger primes for specialized flight-controls talent. (k2space.com) The missile-defense angle is not hypothetical. SpaceNews reported in February 2026 that Wardstone, another startup in the sector, is developing satellites designed to physically intercept missile threats from orbit, including hypersonic missiles. (spacenews.com) For engineers trying to break in, the posting reads less like a narrow software seat and more like a full vehicle-controls assignment. The company is asking for someone who can make a vehicle behave on a screen, on a bench, and eventually in flight. (approach-ventures.app.loxo.co)
