PUMA x LaQuan Smith Speedcat Drops

PUMA released the x LaQuan Smith Speedcat Women's Mid Sneakers in red and black, fusing retro motorsport style with runway sophistication. The collaboration represents a bold new direction for PUMA's high-fashion partnerships, targeting the intersection of athletic and luxury streetwear markets.

This collaboration marks the second time New York designer LaQuan Smith has partnered with PUMA, following their initial collection in February 2023 which featured reimagined RS-X and Kosmo Rider sneakers. For this latest drop, the focus shifts to a boxing-inspired aesthetic, a theme Smith says embodies strength, endurance, and discipline, values that deeply resonate with his brand. The collection includes apparel like tear-away pants and cropped jackets alongside the headlining Speedcat sneakers. Queens native LaQuan Smith, who debuted at New York Fashion Week in 2010, is known for a design philosophy centered on celebrating the female form with an "unapologetically sexy" and glamorous lens. His work often features body-conscious silhouettes and a luxurious feel, attracting a high-profile clientele that includes celebrities like Beyoncé and Rihanna. Smith's goal is to redefine modern sensuality and empower women through his designs. The PUMA Speedcat itself has a rich history, originating in 1999 as a lifestyle sneaker derived from fireproof Formula 1 racing boots. Its design, characterized by a slim profile and thin sole, was engineered to maximize pedal feel for professional drivers. The silhouette quickly crossed over from motorsport to streetwear in the early 2000s, becoming one of PUMA's best-selling shoes. Retailing for approximately $180, the LaQuan Smith Speedcat Mid features a quilted leather upper, a metallic-finish heel counter, and distinctive lacing that wraps around the calf. Smith aimed to honor the Speedcat's legendary roots while infusing it with a "fresh, high-fashion edge," elevating it from the racetrack to the runway. The design incorporates visible stitching and Smith's signature on the tongue. The collaboration taps into current fashion trends like "boxingcore," which blends athletic wear with high-fashion elements inspired by boxing attire. The Speedcat's resurgence also aligns with the "blokecore" aesthetic, a trend popularized on TikTok that pairs vintage-style athletic sneakers and soccer jerseys with casual wear like baggy jeans. This revival of retro sportswear has positioned the Speedcat as a newly trending "It-sneaker."
