Microsoft dials down Copilot branding

Microsoft is removing Copilot branding from some Windows 11 apps while keeping the AI features, and the company has reportedly launched a performance overhaul internally dubbed a 'Copilot code red'. The branding change and internal push follow accusations about aggressive UI tactics pushing Copilot and investor concerns about Azure growth. (moneycontrol.com) (moneycontrol.com)

Microsoft has started stripping the Copilot name from some Windows 11 apps while leaving the artificial intelligence tools in place. (blogs.windows.com) The first visible changes are in Notepad and Snipping Tool, where Windows Insider builds now replace Copilot labels with more generic controls such as “Writing tools.” Microsoft said on March 20 that it would cut “unnecessary Copilot entry points” in Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad. (blogs.windows.com) (windowslatest.com) In Notepad, features such as Write, Rewrite, and Summarize remain available, but the Copilot branding has been removed from menus and settings in the latest Insider rollout. In Snipping Tool, reports say the Copilot button has already disappeared from the capture interface. (windowslatest.com) (engadget.com) The retreat follows a broader reset inside Microsoft’s Windows division. Pavan Davuluri, the company’s president of Windows and devices, said Microsoft would focus in 2026 on system performance, reliability, and “meaningful” artificial intelligence integration instead of spreading Copilot across more surfaces. (blogs.windows.com) At the same time, Microsoft is reportedly running an internal “Copilot code red” ordered by Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella to make the assistant faster, more reliable, and easier to use. Moneycontrol reported the push comes as the company tries to answer investor worries about Azure growth and stronger competition in artificial intelligence. (moneycontrol.com) (finance.yahoo.com) Microsoft’s own latest earnings report still showed Azure as the engine of its cloud business in fiscal 2026 second quarter results, with Intelligent Cloud revenue rising and Azure named as the main driver. But the company has also been under pressure to show that heavy artificial intelligence spending is turning into products people use regularly. (microsoft.com) (moneycontrol.com) This is not a full rollback of Copilot on Windows. Microsoft is still updating the standalone Copilot app, including a March 4 Insider release that opened web links in a side pane and let the app use tab context with permission. (blogs.windows.com) What is changing is where Microsoft puts the brand. In Windows 11, the company is moving Copilot out of places like Notepad and Snipping Tool and back toward a separate app, while keeping the underlying writing and image tools available. (blogs.windows.com) (windowslatest.com) For now, the clearest signal is that Microsoft is still betting on Copilot’s features but no longer wants the name on every button. The next test is whether users notice better performance before they notice the branding change. (blogs.windows.com) (moneycontrol.com)
