Bomb Threat at Fort Lauderdale Airport Disrupts Flights

A man was arrested at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) after an alleged bomb threat on a JetBlue plane. The incident prompted a full evacuation of the aircraft and caused significant flight disruptions at the major South Florida hub.

The suspect, identified as 76-year-old Robert Albanese, allegedly made the threat out of frustration over a lack of overhead space for his carry-on luggage. The incident involved JetBlue flight B6-514, an Airbus A321 bound for New York's JFK Airport, which was delayed for over three hours. Following the threat, the aircraft was evacuated and searched by the Broward Sheriff's Office bomb squad with a K-9 unit before being cleared. False bomb threats at airports carry severe federal and state penalties. Under Florida law, making a false bomb report is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Federal law provides for up to 20 years of imprisonment, particularly if the threat is made once the aircraft doors are closed and it is considered 'in flight'. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is a critical air cargo gateway, particularly for the Caribbean. JetBlue, the airline involved in the incident, operates a dedicated cargo service from FLL in partnership with Aeronex Cargo, shipping a wide variety of goods to numerous island destinations. Any disruption at this hub has a direct impact on supply chains for the region's hospitality industry. Flight delays and cancellations, even for a few hours, create significant logistical and financial challenges that ripple through the Caribbean. These disruptions can halt the flow of time-sensitive and perishable goods, impacting hotel and resort operations that rely on just-in-time inventory for items ranging from fresh food to critical maintenance parts. The economic cost of flight delays is substantial, with U.S. airlines incurring an average cost of over $100 for every minute a flight is delayed.
