Hitachi Unveils 13-Ton Electric Excavator
Hitachi has rolled out a new 13-ton, all-electric excavator capable of continuous 24/7 operation through a dual-mode power system. The machine signals a broader industry shift toward cleaner and quieter heavy equipment for construction. This development is expected to lead to lower emissions and less noise disruption on job sites, particularly in residential areas.
- The new model, designated the ZX135-7EB, is Hitachi's largest battery-powered excavator. It delivers performance comparable to the diesel-powered ZX135-7 model. - Its dual-power system can run on a 198 kWh lithium-ion battery or be connected to a CEE 400 V AC three-phase power supply for continuous operation while charging. - On battery power alone, the excavator has an indicative runtime of 7 to 8 hours. A full AC charge takes approximately 6 hours, while a DC fast charge can be completed in about 1 hour. - This launch is part of a larger industry trend, with the global electric construction equipment market projected to grow from USD 4.51 billion in 2025 to USD 14.36 billion by 2032. - Key competitors have also been expanding their electric offerings; Volvo, for instance, has introduced the 23-ton EC230 Electric excavator, and Caterpillar has an electric version of its 320 model. - The shift to electric offers significant operational benefits beyond emissions, including lower noise levels for work in residential areas, reduced maintenance costs due to fewer moving parts, and less operator fatigue due to decreased vibration. - The machine includes modern safety and monitoring features, such as the Aerial Angle camera system which provides a 270-degree bird's-eye view, and remote monitoring of battery status and motor load. - The introduction of the ZX135-7EB was timed shortly before the major construction industry trade show, CONEXPO 2026 in Las Vegas.
