OpenAI Closes $110B Funding Round
OpenAI has closed a record-breaking $110 billion funding round, cementing its dominance in the AI sector. Tech giants Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank led the massive investment. The new capital provides OpenAI with unparalleled resources for computing infrastructure and product development as the AI arms race intensifies.
This new capital brings OpenAI's post-money valuation to a staggering $840 billion, placing it among the most valuable privately held technology companies in the world. The financing marks the largest venture deal ever recorded, more than doubling the previous record of $40 billion, which was also set by OpenAI in 2025. Amazon's $50 billion investment is not entirely upfront; it will begin with an initial $15 billion, with the remaining $35 billion contingent on OpenAI meeting certain milestones, which could include progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI) or an initial public offering. This strategic partnership significantly expands upon a previous cloud computing agreement, with OpenAI committing to spend an additional $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next eight years. As part of the deal, OpenAI will gain dedicated access to Nvidia's next-generation "Vera Rubin" GPU architecture, securing crucial computing power for training and deploying more advanced AI models. The company is also set to utilize 2 gigawatts of Amazon's proprietary Trainium AI chip capacity, further diversifying its hardware infrastructure. This massive infusion of capital and computing resources is happening alongside significant investments in competitors. Rival AI lab Anthropic recently raised $30 billion at a $380 billion valuation, highlighting the intense competition for capital and talent in the AI sector. Despite the new high-profile investors, OpenAI's foundational partnership with Microsoft remains unchanged. Microsoft maintains a 27% stake in the company and its Azure cloud platform continues to be the exclusive host for OpenAI's primary products and APIs. The deal significantly increases the value of the non-profit OpenAI Foundation's stake in the for-profit entity to over $180 billion. This structure is intended to ensure the company's strategic direction aligns with the foundation's charter of ensuring AGI benefits all of humanity.
