Slay The Spire 2 Steam Success

Slay The Spire 2 has become the 20th most-played game in Steam history, surpassing even major single-player blockbusters for concurrent users. The roguelike deckbuilder's meteoric rise demonstrates the growing popularity of challenging, replayable indie strategy games.

Developer Mega Crit launched Slay the Spire 2 into early access on March 5, 2026, after a delay from a planned 2025 release. The sequel was rebuilt from the ground up in the Godot engine, a move made after changes to the Unity engine's licensing. The game is currently exclusive to PC and is verified for the Steam Deck from day one. Within its first few days, Slay the Spire 2 shattered genre records, peaking at over 574,000 concurrent players. This figure is roughly ten times the all-time peak of the original Slay the Spire, which topped out at about 57,000 players. The sequel's launch-day concurrent player count was nearly 180,000, a massive increase from the original's 193 players when it first launched in 2017. The game's peak player count has surpassed that of major titles like Call of Duty, Terraria, and Valheim on Steam. Its launch performance also eclipsed other highly anticipated 2026 releases, including Resident Evil Requiem. The title is currently the top seller on Steam and has garnered "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews. A significant new feature in Slay the Spire 2 is the introduction of a four-player cooperative mode. The sequel also brings back returning characters like the Ironclad and the Silent while introducing new ones, such as the Necrobinder. Developer Mega Crit has stated that the decision to create a sequel was heavily influenced by the immense fan support for the first game.
