Luka Dončić Drops 44 Points for Lakers

Luka Dončić scored 44 points in just 32 minutes to lead the Lakers to a victory over the Pacers. The dominant performance came even with LeBron James sitting out the game.

In a league-altering move in February 2025, the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks. The blockbuster trade sent eight-time All-Star Anthony Davis, guard Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick to Dallas. The Mavericks also sent Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Lakers as part of the deal. The trade was a massive surprise across the NBA, coming together after Mavericks GM Nico Harrison initiated talks with Lakers GM Rob Pelinka. At the time of the trade, Dončić was a five-time All-NBA First Team selection and had led the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals. He was averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in the 2024-2025 season before the move. Some analysts suggested that Dončić's supermax contract and perceived conditioning issues may have motivated the Mavericks to make the trade, despite the Lakers acquiring him at what was considered a "insanely discounted price". For the Lakers, the move was seen as acquiring a young global superstar to lead the franchise for the foreseeable future, pairing him with LeBron James. The deal was part of a three-team trade, with the Utah Jazz facilitating by receiving Jalen Hood-Schifino and second-round picks. Dončić expressed shock at the move, calling Dallas "home," but also stated his excitement to play for the Lakers. Just over a year after the trade, Max Christie is the only player from the deal remaining with the Mavericks.
